Former 7 Wonder creative director Duncan Coates takes on newly-created role

Shine TV has appointed former creative director of 7 Wonder Duncan Coates in the new role of head of programmes.

Coates will work closely with creative director Tim Whitwell and recently-hired director of development and entertainment Mark Sammon to further build the Endemol Shine company’s slate and extend its range of output.

Coates was most recently creative director of 7 Wonder Productions, where he was responsible for Channel 4’s Seven Year Switch, Bride and Prejudice and My F***ing Tourette’s Family and ITV’s Diabetes: The Fast Fix.

Prior to this, he was director of programmes at Betty Television, where he was responsible for a broad slate of C4 formats including The Undateables, Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners and Ugly House to Lovely House.

As an executive producer at Wall to Wall Television, Coates produced the first three series of ITV’s Long Lost Family and worked as a series producer on formats including C4’s Secret Millionaire and Brat Camp and ITV’s Bad Lad’s Army.

In the new role he will report to managing director Tanya Shaw, who called Coates a “brilliant programme-maker with an impeccable track record across a range of factual formats”.

Shaw added: “With Duncan onboard we can really push to all corners of the factual genre, extending our range and continuing to grow our business.”
