National Geographic to shine a light on global mega-brands in new series

DSP has been commissioned by National Geographic to produce a 12-part series that will unveil the incredible scale and human ingenuity behind the manufacture and transportation of some of America’s biggest, global brands.

From Jack Daniels to TESLA, Tabasco sauce to space travel and Gibson Guitars, Made in A Day (12×30’) will go behind the scenes at some of America’s biggest manufacturers and shine a light on how the brands have become some of the largest and most iconic in the world.

The series will chart the revolution in manufacturing and international logistics in the last 10 years. What used to take a month to make and deliver now takes just a day and nowhere is this more evident than in the USA – an economic powerhouse at the heart of the global economy.

The episodes featured in the series are:

JACK DANIELS: 

America’s most famous liquor started with humble beginnings, 150 years ago, in Lynchburg, Tennessee . This same distillery now makes over 120 million bottles a year of one of the world’s most beloved brews. From the grains that turn in to mash, the distilling process and the charcoal mellowing and barrel storage, this is the story of how Jack Daniels is made and competes in a whisky market worth 800 billion dollars a year.

ULA (UNITED LAUNCH AGENCY): 

The story of a rocket from metal sheets to a 1.3 million pound-heavy taxi service to the stars. With opportunities and benefits to all mankind, it’s open season in space with rocket missions set toward a trillion-dollar economy in the next 20 years. US heavyweight rocket builder, ULA is at the cutting edge of final frontier exploration.

TABASCO: 

The story of how hot sauce is made and distributed. From its humble beginnings as chili peppers grown on the farms of Central and South America, this zingy fruit has spread globally to become one of the most sought-after ingredients in a booming hot sauce market worth over $4 billion in sales. Tabasco, one of the originals, still sets the market on fire, selling over 182 million bottles per year.

TRACTORS: 

As the world gears up to feed growing populations, world-renowned agricultural giant John Deere opens the doors to their Iowa mega-factory to reveal how they make the world’s most powerful tractors. Combining a giant iron foundry with high-tech manufacturing operation, they built big machines designed to feed the world.

JEEP: 

With a history stretching back almost 80 years, Jeep is the original all-terrain car maker. Unprecedented access to their Ohio factory lifts the lid on how everyday they harness robot power to make thousands of the world’s most iconic 4×4– the Jeep Wrangler. We discover the secrets of the Wrangler’s success, and how they ship hundreds of thousands of cars per year.

GATE GOURMET: 

Gate Gourmet are the world’s largest airline caterers, producing millions of meals from their huge Los Angeles kitchen every year. In this episode we go behind-the-scenes to reveal how locally sourced ingredients, and expert chefs, manage to feed 40,000 people flying from LAX every day.

ONEWEB SATELLITES: 

OneWeb Satellites in Florida spill the beans on how they’re making the world’s first mass-produced satellites. A combination of space vehicle designers, manufacturing engineers and robotics come together to build and launch web satellites into space, providing internet to almost every part of the globe.

PIERCE FIRETRUCKS: 

At the heart of every community, is a firehouse; at the heart of that firehouse are the firefighters who put their lives on the line 24/7. The warhorse that carries them in to battle is the iconic fire truck. There are nearly 250,000 fire trucks worldwide. This is the story of how America’s favourite ones are made.

GIBSON GUITARS: 

Gibson Guitars in Nashville, Tennessee, spill the beans on how they make their iconic instruments. A combination of high-tech machinery, hand crafting skills and global logistics come together to bring their famous Les Paul electric guitar to the world’s stage.

NEW BALANCE: 

In the series exploring cutting-edge manufacturing in America, the new balance flagship factory in Lawrence, Massachusetts is featured. They are one of the few big brand sneaker companies still making their shoes in America. A combination of high-tech machinery, hand crafting skills and global logistics come together to make and distribute their best-selling sneaker and bring it to the world.

AIR BUS HELICOPTERS: 

Helicopters are the machines at the frontlines of every, major emergency and there are 30,000 civilian ones in the world today. In this episode we see how Airbus make the H-125 – the most popular single engine chopper on the planet.

TESLA: 

Tesla in Freemont, California share electrifying insights into one of the most iconic electric cars – the Model 3. A surprising degree of high-tech automation, done by an army of robots, together with teams of skilled employees and global logistics reveal just how these electric cars are made.
